McLaren MP4/25 aero-mech development in 2010

Post by bar555 » 18 Feb 2010, 10:17

Once again the Mc Laren team used fluorescent paint , this time during the winter test at Valencia , to understand the car’s aerodynamics . The green fluorescent paint is mixed with paraffin oil and placed around the car and when it is disrupted by high speed air gives an indication of the airflow to identify how certain parts of the car are working

A variety of Pitot rakes were used during the test at Jerez to help the team evaluate the air speed not only around the car but also the speed of air entering into the radiators inlets .

It is no secret that the new MP4/25 faces overheating problems . The sidepods are really very compact , even with the new much larger fuel cell and there are many different types of hot air exiting holes around the car body to cool the car . There are long slits at the front upper sidepods part (1) , at cockpit sides like the Red Bull RB5 and at the rear . So the team need to measure the air speed entering the sidepod inlets - radiators to find out if the cooling needs are fullfilled ot not

The team during Winter testing tested multiple configurations of hot air exits .At Bahrain the following outlets existed :
-.Gills around the cockpit zone
-.Slots on the sidepods
-.Around the exhaust pipes
-.Central rear
-.Above the rear light

Interesting to see overheating issues with the McLaren. I wonder if it could turn into the MP4/18 all over again...

How do you think are the overheating problems coming out of the winter, bar..?

I believe Mc Laren had ( may still have ) overheating problems for the following reasons :
1.The sidepods are very very compact
2.The team tested many variations of cooling options . Holes and louvers were shown around the cockpit zone , slots at sidepods upper front part , rear zone etc ...
3. Pitot rakes were placed in front of the radiators inlets to measure the speed of air entering into the inlets
4.The rear bodywork and the exhausts outlets were completely redesigned and have grown in size a lot at Barcelona . It is well understood that a larger rear end creates more unwanted drag but dealing with cooling issues is vital .
5.Spreading rumors about overheating problems

Of course this is still an hypothesis which is not proven yet , but the indications are though strong , don’t you think ?

Well, in winter testing they showed they weren't as reliable as the last 3 seasons, but do you think the upgrades they had during the last test were promising considering the cooling of the car?

To be honest ... no !
We have to wait till Bahrain to see the MP4/25 behaviour in hot conditions and full race time .

anyone seen the extra kind of wing part right below the front nose? Also, are there any pictures of their controversial rear wing?

Do we have any information regarding the ducting used to stall the rear wing? All I know is that it will be very interesting to look at the inside of their nose if we can ever get a shot of that.

According to Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh, the team will introduce a number of small improvements to the car ahead of the Australian Grand Prix
