I reckon this would be better:

1st: 20 points
2nd: 14 points
3rd: 10 points
4th: 8 points
5th: 6 points
6th: 5 points
7th: 4 points
8th: 3 points
9th: 2 points
10th: 1 point
.

i have to give this (what Phil said) a thumbs up. It would still be interesting as you may see as people might tend to be more aggressive in their driving and strategy (atleast i hope so :)

Because the gap of 5 points between 1st and 2nd would be just the same as 2003-9!
Work it out!

10 - 8 = 2, okay. Stay with me here. 1st will get 25 points, 2nd will get 20 points. Both have increased by a factor of 2.5, so there will be little difference in terms of fighting for the win or settling for 2nd

Note: Only those who can do Maths will understand the above. I'm not sure if I understand it myself

though what you say is true, but still getting 25 points for a win will always feel better than 10 (for the winner). and i guess thay wanted the ratio to be same as far as more positions are accomodated and Bernie would agree as he wanted those silly medals system (and he might have not understood the logic  )

People are saying (on other websites) that it will be too easy for drivers to get points, but in fact, it'll be harder:

In 2009, 40% of the field got points in each race (8/20 = 4/10)
In 2010, assuming all the new teams arrive in Bahrain, 38.5% of the field will get points. The only problem with the new system is if some of the teams don't make it

Personally I think the best system would be to reward Top 12 with 100-75-50-30-20-15-10-8-6-4-2-1 with 2 pts for pole and 1pt for fastest lap. it would mean that there would be incentives for all, even if you are 3 laps down and in P24.
This new system is OK, but still doesn't provide enough incentive to win.

Mssa might get about 38 points there itself (for quali) and Kimi(if he had been there) would have scored 19 (for FL) :zz:

i wouldnt agree with this system though.
just imagine if Schumi were to have a 2002 season then he would double his total points in one season

Is the new points system valid..?
Spoiler:
Dec.15 (GMM) F1's new points system could be scrapped before the first race in 2010 for two reasons, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

The report claims the system was adopted illegally by the F1 Commission, and subsequently ratified by the World Motor Sport Council.

Auto Motor und Sport said the F1 Commission, which had not met for several years prior to its recent Monaco meeting, can only vote on desired rule changes that are put forward in full by the Sporting and Technical Working Groups.

It is revealed, however, that the sporting group discussed the points system for only two minutes during its 4 December meeting, with only USF1's Peter Windsor pushing for a change.

Meanwhile, the FIA has confirmed that the new points system, awarding points down to tenth place, was devised due to "the expanded grid of 13 teams".

But if fewer than 13 teams ultimately turn up in Bahrain next March, F1 could face a situation where nearly half of the entire grid is awarded points at the end of races.

Yes, I think this can be a better system.

massive points up for grabs there...... for sure the champion (even runner-up) would shatter the all-time scoring record for the duration of the season. although i like to see those huge numbers.

The funny thing about awarding a point for fastest laps is that we would have every driver not in a points position pitting a few laps from the end for new tyres, and then belting round at the limit (or over it) trying to score the FL point. however id love to see it introduced so that everything wouldnt be concluded until the last car crosses the line
