4 hours drive from my house. If open to the public, I'll be there. :)

Didn't Jose Maria Lopez say it was going to be in Charlotte? Shows what he knows about the team he's 'joining'. :p
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.

Today’s Gazzetta Sportiva, the Sunday edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport has a full page dedicated to revealing some details of the 2010 Ferrari which will be launched later this month in time for the Valencia test from 1-3 February.

It looks pretty aggressive, judging from the drawing by F1’s pre-eminent technical journalist, Giorgio Piola. He is not always right but after over 40 years in the business and with some impeccable contacts at Ferrari, we can be fairly confident that the information is valid.

Piola suggests that there are strong echoes of last year’s Red Bull, arguably the most successful car aerodynamically of 2009, the area where Ferrari got it wrong. The cockpit top is higher than last year’s car and the nose has a step in it, like last year’s Red Bull, the diffuser is also said to be similar to the Red Bull.

To accommodate the new rules, the fuel tank is said to be double the size of last year’s at 240 litres, almost six times the size of a Fiat Punto tank, the paper points out. This means that the wheelbase is 15cm longer than the 2009 car. Allowing for the higher minimum weight (620kg) and the full fuel tanks, sitting on the start line of the race, the car will be 185 kilos heavier this year, which is 30% more than last year! That is going to give the brakes a seriously hard time at tracks like Bahrain and Montreal.

The 2010 cars will have narrower front tyres, as per the new rules and this will mean that the weight distribution will have to move rearwards a bit and it will affect the aerodynamics down the vitally important channel between the front wheels and the cockpit. The wheel covers have been banned.

The oil tank has been moved from in front of the engine to behind it, to allow for the enlarged fuel tank.

In a separate story, there is a suggestion in Gazzetta that USF1 has applied to the FIA for a derogation to miss the early fly away races and start at the Spanish Grand Prix in April. This contradicts USF1 sporting director Peter Windsor’s assertion last week that the team will definitely be in Bahrain. It’s Sunday today, but I will follow this up when the offices open on Monday.

A Bigger Picture
Image
Here is a translation of the points made in the Italian La Gazzeta Dello Sport publication.

1. At the launch in Maranello the new car will still have the front wing of the F60, we will only see the new front wing during the Valencia test.

2. The chassis will be higher in the area of the nose-cone, which will have a shape à la Red Bull (already tested on the F60 last summer).

3. Thanks to the front tyres being smaller and the chassis higher in that area, aerodynamic elements will be attached to the underside of the nosecone in between the front suspension. The smaller front tyres and the ban on wheel fairings are responsible for substantial changes in the front end aerodynamics.

4. Ferrari will continue to sport the external mirrors, still on top of the aerodynamic appendages.

5. The radiators will be longer to compensate for the larger tank area.

6. The tank capacity will be a lot bigger, it goes from around 100-120 litres of fuel last year to around 240 litres this year. As a consequence all the cars will have a longer wheelbase (around 15 cm). Everything has been designed in function of this major change in the regulations: from the weight distribution to the aerodynamics, from the suspensions to the brakes. Keep in mind that during the race, due to the ever lowering fuel load, the ride height of the car will be substantially different at the end of the race compared to the start of it. The aerodynamics and suspensions have been designed in such a way that they are least affected by this change. On the other hand, it will be up to the drivers to manage the brakes and the mechanical side of things in the best way possible.

7. The exhaust manifolds will be a bit more to the front.

8. The arms of the rear suspension will be inclined a bit more to the front as well in order to better exploit the air channels that aid the area of the double diffuser.

9. The biggest change will be the return (after 12 years) of the dislocation of the oil tank. The necessity to gain space in the quest to minimise the lengthening of the wheelbase prevents the designers to place the oil tank a central position (in between the engine and the chassis like usual).

Therefore, a solution first applied in 1998 (and then adopted on all cars) by Alan Jenkins, designer of Stewart, and John Barnard, technical chief of Arrows back in those days, has been reintroduced. So the technicians have made a leap into past placing the oil tank behind the engine, inside the housing of the gearbox. A choice that’s not optimal in terms of lowering and centering the weight as much as possible, but one that had to be taken due to fuel tank being much bigger now.

10. The shape of the diffuser, comprising of three channels, resembles to the one Red Bull had in the latter part of the 2009 season.

11. The rear end crash structure is an integral part of the rear end aerodynamics.

12. Like the front wing, we will only see the new rear wing during the first test in Spain.

McLaren To Launch MP4-25 Before Valencia Testing
McLaren's 2010 car will reportedly be unveiled the week before it makes its test debut in Valencia at the beginning of February.
The British team announced a week ago that the MP4-25 would be ready with Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton at the first group test of the pre-season at the Ricardo Tormo circuit that kicks of in just over two weeks time.
The Mirror newspaper on Monday said McLaren "will unveil their new car" in "a little over a fortnight".
"I'm excited," said 2008 world champion Hamilton. "I can't wait to see the new car and test it."
He said he would work with his British countryman and new teammate Button to make the single
seater as competitive as possible.
"Only once we've achieved that can we start looking at winning races and then, eventually, the world championship," said the 25-year-old.
"Jenson and I will be sharing pre-season testing equally, and it will be important to keep a crossover of information between us to make sure we are both pulling in the right direction," added Hamilton.
