On Freeview, you have channels you get for free and some are encrypted.

if you think about you only have to pay for march through to november to watch all the races which is £90

Well I guess half the races is ok. I doubt I'll pay up the extra for SKY to watch them live but you never know, I might cave in. If I get a pay rise in April I might be more tempted!

So we dont get the first two races of the season. Well i guess that means I wont be bothering until all the races are shown live on terrestrial television. As much as I love F1, im not moving to sky. They make it sound like a good deal when you go and buy sky, its free if youve got the HD pack or Skysports 1/2, which is expensive as it is.

Me and my dad pay £45 for virginmedia XL, which is everything but sky movies and sports, thats for 3 boxes; 1 in the front room and one in my bedroom and dads bedroom. Also includes 20meg broadband and landline. Its a pretty damn good price. To get sky sports its a further £30.

Now correct me if im wrong, how would an F1 channel work? over 19 weekends, there is 3 hours on a friday, 2 hours on a saturday and 2 hours on a sunday of track time. so thats 7 hours total. Cut out all the bulls** filler c**p which you can find on the interent, 7 hours over 19 weekends/57 days, so thats what, 133 hours of television a year. That is not even a weeks worth of television (168 hours in a week). So overall, theyre going to have to do 161 hours of analysis, talking and interviews.

Another possibility is doing re-runs of old races. Seeing as a majority of the footage is gone, or unusable. lets for example, take 80's-2012.

so, from the 1980 season to the full 2011 season there was 514 grands prix. So if you multiply that by rule of thumb, 2 hours (i know, most races werent 2 hours, but thats the limit), that means there is 1018 hours worth of grand prix footage if they have the full races. from the earlier seasons IE 80's/90's, they might have to add qualifying in to meet two hours of highlights, but footage may not exist even now days.

So basically, what im trying to say is there is 8736 hours in a year, theres only potentially 1018 hours worth of footage from 31 years worth of grand prix racing. I mean for godsake, the DVD seson reviews are best part of 2 and a half/3 hours for modern seasons, the VHS video reviews from the 80's are only 80-90 minuets long!

So what the hell are you paying for an F1 channel, when theres only footage for an eight of a year of previous grands prix, on top of 133 hours of live racing footage, add an 19 hours for qualifying build up, and 9 and a half hours of qualifying analysis, then add 19 hours of pre-race build up and 19 hours of race analysis equating to 66 hours 33 minuets of build up/analysis taking it to 163.5 hours of formula 1 live stream. add that to the 1018 hours of 30 years of grand prix racing, that 1183.5 hours a year. Still around an eigth of a year.

So what the hell can they show on the channel aside from constant repeats over and over and over and over of the previous race? You can effectively do a whole seasons footage in under a day and a half. It makes absolutly no sense to pay for a channel which in effect, will only have 2 months of viewing. 10 months of..... well, repeated repeats.

And it sucks mate. I wont watch it out of principle.

Although theres no chance im not getting my Alonso 1:18 model car. Only got 25 models, and the turkish GP 150 Italia is out in march, and then in november the 2012 car is released ;)

But on a serious note, if I cant watch the season, im not putting my money into anything from any sponsors or teams, like buy a team cap or team tshirt and so forth. I even cancelled the hotel I pre-booked with to goto the british GP. Why should I when in honesty, doesn't it feel asif the sport has turned its back on its fans? It was already mostly inaccessible to those without mega money to get to the drivers and speak to them properly or access the paddock. The only thing we had was free TV to watch it. Instead we've got to pay for that as well now. Well no way. I might not pay to go to watch races, but I buy the equivelant in merchandise and so forth.

F1 hasn't turned it's back on Britain; people need to understand that it was a decision by the BBC. The teams cannot do anything about it because of the wording in the Concorde Agreement. All 20 races must be on FTA. They are, just not live; so the teams are stumped.

I'm still debating. Its a lot of money, but I've saved several thousand pounds through not staying at Uni halls but commuting instead. But if I have a media pass next year, I might not need the Tv

And remember, there's always plenty of streams in a worst case scenario- plus you guys mostly have high speed, high/no limit internet so it's even better- and PC to TV cables are only about £10-£15- granted, the picture quality won't be great, but it isn't unwatchable on an 80cm screen.

Nevertheless, this deal is terrible for the fans, and I've lost a lot of respect for the BBC in their handling of this- they colluded with Sky to prevent other FTA broadcasters from accessing the rights. Wouldn't surprise me if they decide that 'due to ratings for the highlights' they decide to scrap all live coverage completely.

Also, I reckon that Sky Sports F1 is only a temporary channel- I suspect it could end up being a motorsport channel if Sky acquires more motorsport rights (and would explain the SkySportsSpeed twitter feed).
