Sky and BBC awarded F1 rights for 2012-2018
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsp ... 550930.stm
In short:
Sky Sports:
Every practice, quali and race live for all rounds
BBC:
Every practice, quali and race live for half the rounds (10 in 2012 assuming 20 rounds- if there is 19 rounds then BBC only get 9 rounds)
Highlights for every other race + live 5 Live radio commentary
Sounds pretty bad in my view, if you don't have Sky Sports.

That may create a precedent for other countries to follow. That would be awful.
British folks - Can you give us an insight how much does it cost to have a Sky subscription and do they give commercial breaks during sporting events? And do Sky cover those events live on internet?

Re: Formula One TV Coverage
is the concorde agreement specific as to saying that all races must be free to air? So isn't this breaking the contract with the teams and sponsors? I mean free to air is their biggest audience, and they are losing at least half the exposure, and im willing to bet they will lose more than half, as I dont see a point watching half a bloody season
Re: Formula One TV Coverage
That sucks massively for all of you people in the UK. Let's hope it doesn't give anyone funny ideas abroad.
I had been wondering for a while though, how a commercial-free coverage of F1 could possibly be economically sustainable. I guess that one's been answered.

Martin Brundle is not impressed and out of contract, according to his Twitter.
Will be interesting to see the commentating arrangement.

According to Andrew Benson, Berie said that it wasn't his decision to give the contract to sky.

To be honest, F1 is sustainable as it is.François wrote:That sucks massively for all of you people in the UK. Let's hope it doesn't give anyone funny ideas abroad.

It gets so much money from tracks, from tv and from merchandise sales and so forth, that its been sustainable all these years and would still be.
I mean a team reaction statement on Autosport saw Adam Parr say hes happy to forfeit viewing figures for money.......
Re: Formula One TV Coverage
I mean for the BBC.

The BBC is just an epic failure.François wrote:I mean for the BBC.
I mean, they just bought a show to 'rival' x-factor for £17million. They pay presenters way way too much. 90% of the programmes bye the BBC are just utter c**p.
The only BBC programmes I watch are Luther, Topgear, Sherlock and F1 along with the news and Moto GP. Theres literally nothing else. Countryfile? Rubbish. One show? rubbish. all the escape to the country/homes under the hammer? Rubbish. Doctors and bargain hunt? rubbish. Cash in the attic? rubbish. almost all the tv shows on BBC are absolute rubbish.
I dont get how you could cut F1 which has a MASSIVE viewing platform, much much more than alot of those programmes put together but still keep the rubbish!
Funny how the government basically runs BBC and their fiasco with the Murdochs and links/connections. Who knows, maybe Bernies had his phone hacked and is being black mailed
