Badoer targets Valencia race finish
Luca Badoer says just getting to the finish of this weekend's European Grand Prix will be a good result for him, as he continues his preparations for his Formula 1 return.
The Italian is filling in at Ferrari for Felipe Massa, having been granted the opportunity when Michael Schumacher was prevented driving because of an old neck injury.
And having completed two days of running in an F60 for promotional purposes at Fiorano on Monday and Tuesday this week, Badoer is under no illusions about the task he is facing.
"I have a good impression and it's obvious that there's a difficult task waiting for me at Valencia," he explained. "The first race will help me to get back into the rhythm of a Formula 1 weekend. I haven't set myself any goals, just to end the race."
Badoer has also denied any suggestion that the promotional run he conducted in the F60, which is allowed under the terms of the F1 testing ban, has given him any kind of advantage.
"These 200 kilometres were absolutely insignificant from a technical point of view, but they allowed me to get to know the car again," he explained.
Badoer's efforts over the weekend will also be boosted by the presence of Schumacher, who has decided to travel to Valencia even though he is unable to race.
"I'm glad that Michael will be with the team, I'm sure he can give me some important tips," he explained. "Over the last days we've spoken very often and we even trained together when he was still trying to get ready to race.
"I was really sad, because I know how much he would have liked it. Although I am now able to make my dream come true, I am his friend, his admirer and his fan."
Badoer is also looking forward to working with new team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.
"We've got an excellent relationship and I'm sure that we’ll work very well together as team-mates," he said. "He's got his character, but that’s nothing new; I feel very good when we’re together."

Badoer to race until Massa returns
Luca Badoer has confirmed that he will continue to race the second Ferrari until Felipe Massa is fit enough to return.
The 38-year-old Italian, who last raced in Formula 1 in the 1999 Japanese Grand Prix and makes his return to the sport in this weekend's race at Valencia, was also confirmed in the seat by a Ferrari spokesman.
Badoer said in the European GP press conference on Thursday that knowing he had more than one chance to race for Ferrari had taken some of the pressure off him this weekend.
"If I had only Valencia, only one chance, I would be very worried, and I would try to do everything, maybe with a lot of pressure and maybe with a lot of mistakes - but that's not the case because until Felipe comes back, the car is mine," he said. "So I have some time in which to improve, to develop the situation."
Badoer, who was called up to replace Michael Schumacher after the seven-time world champion was forced to cancel his comeback because of a niggling neck injury, added that he felt calm ahead of his F1 return.
"My last race was 10 years ago more or less but I did in these 10 years close to 150,000kms with F1," he said.
"I am used to doing two races in one day because of the tests, sometimes we did two races in a day, so it is not that really I am worried for this aspect of the situation.
"I am used to the race as before I did a lot of races. If you think for somebody who had never raced maybe it is a problem but I know what it was in the past, so I have an idea.
"I am in a better position than somebody who didn't have a race, so at the moment I am very calm, very quiet."
Badoer did admit however that he was excited to finally be living out a boyhood fantasy: "Yeah, in a way I am very excited as this is my dream.
"To drive for Ferrari in F1 was for all my life being simply a dream," he said. "Now I can have it and I am the happiest driver in the world."

Re: Felipe Massa Injury - Badoer to race until Massa returns
Badoer will not race till Massa returns.
First, reports from many sources, including some close to Michael, state that he is still training to be as fit as he can be, for a possible return later this season. Second, Badoer's race seat is in danger from Badoer himself. His best time (1:45:8) in the first training session was 1.1 seconds slower than the next slowest drive (Glock @1:44:7). He was 2.5 sec off Kimi's pace and 3.1 sec off Rubens. Ferrari is a results oriented organization. Even if Michael does not return this season or ever, Badoer ain't staying. He can claim in the press conference that his race seat is his till Massa returns and that he used to drive 2 GP distances per day, all he wants. Ferrari is a results-oriented organization and they demand results. And fielding Kimi in the middle of the pack and Badoer at the tail end is not their plan nor will they accept it for more than a week-end.
Badoer is just that: a reliable but slow TEST driver. He is a relic of the Schumi-era when maybe he was consistently some amount off the pace of Michael, same amount day in and day out, year after year. If something he tested on the car made it go quicker, then Michael would have been quicker by about the same amount.

Re: Felipe Massa Injury - Badoer might be replaced
Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali has left the door open to replace Luca Badoer after the Belgian Grand Prix if the Italian does not manage to raise his game.
Badoer, standing in for the injured Felipe Massa, struggled at the back of the field at the European Grand Prix this weekend.
The Ferrari test driver, who had not raced since 1999, qualified and finished last in the Valencia race, although he had made it clear the event was just a test for him and is hoping to do better at Spa.
Although there were suggestions this weekend that Badoer would keep the seat until Massa is back, Domenicali suggested things could change after the next race.
"What I said exactly, to be precise, is that for us the first priority is to understand when Felipe Massa will come back," Domenicali told reporters after the race.
"For sure it is an important race for Luca Badoer next weekend. We are expecting a big jump from him and then we will see."
The Italian team boss admitted Ferrari cannot afford to have a car finishing at the bottom of the field, especially with the Maranello-based squad now in a close fight for third place with McLaren.
He did praise Badoer's fitness, however, after the Italian finished the race without problems.
"As I have said before, Ferrari cannot be satisfied with a car in last position," he said. "That is pretty clear, but we need to consider all the circumstances and everything that has happened. I think if you look behind it, for sure it was a difficult weekend for him.
"In terms of race pace, if you look to compare to the other young drivers, you can make your opinion.
"He did a great start and then he was touched from behind so he lost a place, and then in terms of rhythm - everyone was worried this morning about his health, worried about that it was not possible for him to get to the finish and that he would have to go to the hospital. But he was very good."
