Has the racing improved?

Post by TwistedArmco » 16 Apr 2009, 22:54

This will be a topic ongoing into the season. If you want to reserve judgement because you believe you haven't seen enough racing yet, then do. :)

So, when you're ready:

1. Has the racing improved?

2. Do cars seem to be following each other closely better?

3. Do the cars look better when circulating the track?

4. Is there more overtaking?

Answer all, none or some of these questions (make up your own questions and answers if you so desire) as you wish to put forward your own view.
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.

completely disagree with statement #3

all cars sure don't look as sporty and as good as previous years' cars. won't this hurt the sponsors advertising??

1. Has the racing improved?
I think so, very very close racing, and with all the teams with a DDD, we might even get closer racing then we already have at this moment... I'm really anxious to know what'll it be at that time...

2. Do cars seem to be following each other closely better?
Yes, certainly, last year you heard drivers complaining all the time about losing downforce when racing very close behind a competitor. I thought it was Brawn who said they were losing downforce when driving 3 seconds behind you're closest competitor.. I think that's history now, with all the new specifications.

3. Do the cars look better when circulating the track?
No, but I'm already used to it, I quite like them now :)

4. Is there more overtaking?
Yes: the reason, in my opinion, why there's more overtaking is because of the closer racing, and that in combination with some teams already using KERS, gives more overtaking, plus the fact that close racing isn't as difficult compared to as it was last year.

BUT: maybe this will change: when all the teams and cars are running with KERS, we might get less overtaking. Like Glock was shouting over his boardradio in Melbourne: "I can't get pas Fernando, he is using KERS all the time" (Or something like that). But that means that if the car in front is using KERS the same time as the car that wants to overtake, we might get less overtaking...

Joost, racing will be less closer when everybody has a DDD, the downforce will be just like last year then. At least, Mario Theissen said that. But until now, the racing has been really good, especially midfield obviously.

So, for now:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Different, I wouldn't say worse
4. Yes

Just compare this year Malaysia with last year, and in 1 hour there has been more overtaking than the whole race last year.

But Mario Theissen would say that wouldn't he? I don't think this diffuser business will change anything apart from lap time. The racing's been a big improvement, its just a shame we've had so many off track shenanigans.

I hope it won't change the racing and the overtaking, but I think that the diffusers can spoil it for a bit, because I think the diffusers are a factor that counts when you're driving behind someone. I just hope the racing will remain good.

I don't think the DDD's will affect racing TOO adversely. After all, the cars are still down on downforce and grip from last year, but still, I do agree with sejtur and everyone else that says it will kill the racing slightly, because I think it will.

1. Has the racing improved?
No! ....their is no radical change. Rules changes have only swing performance advantage from one Team to other like 2005. I don't see that as 'Improved Racing'.

2. Do cars seem to be following each other closely better?
BIT.

3. Do the cars look better when circulating the track?
Nah ..it looks sad! ... A1GP is rock solid in this case; they look good and produce some quality racing.

4. Is there more overtaking?
Yes, but it is nothing new when you consider this is just start of the season with new rules.

In short, i think OWG was not done home-work properly.

I think I'm going to reserve judgement until we get more 'normal' races, but Bahrain was only semi-encouraging..

The dirty air is still there, Alonso and Vettel complained about it. Its not as bad as before, but it hasn't worked as much as they were hoping it would
