What´s the problem with deciding the championship with medals? Please tell me the reason why you, who "voted" against it think that way.

I think it´s a great way to clean up the sport from all this tactical nonsense an luck. The guy with the most wins, wins the championship, ít´s the way it should be and should have been done for many years ago. The 2003 introduced points system is absolute c**p, it nearly produced two world champions, with only 1 win apiece, Kimi 2003 and Kubica this year and Kubica´s victory was even lucky. Same thing 2005, Kimi was the faster man, but had reliability problems so Alonso had a walk in the park to win the championship. With the medal system it would have been tight until the last corner and Kimi wouldn´t have been punished that much for his cars technical failures.

I think in modern F1 with it´s high reliability the medal system is the only choice, a points system for the Drivers Champ. doesn´t make sense anymore. It benefits 4 - 5th places as much as 2 victories, which is ridiculous.

We have points for 58 years now ! Medals ?!?! Bernie must retire, he`s old and wealthy.

12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1
1 point for Pole
1 point for fastest lap

Perfect !

I agree the current system is nonsense, 2 points advantage is too low to reward a race winner, and the driver in 2nd place will not risk too much to overtake cause he won`t loose that much. I remember the older systems: 9-6 and then 10-6 and it was great. Just add 2 more to 12 to keep the 8th car in the points to give more chances to the smaller teams.

12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 is the most practical way to go, if not then go back to 10-6-4-3-2-1. but the medal system......well, maybe try it for next year and see what happens.

1st -10 points
4th - 5 points
5th - 4 points

hardly.

I agree with the 12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system. People are saying it will make the racing better (medals) so lets say Hamilton goes and wins the every other race at the start of the season. He wins the championship before the end then he will be inclined to just not do anything. Same for people below 4th. They will have no real reason to race and won't bother.

+1

The idea of medals is ridiculous. For the ceremony, but not the championship. Yes it is about winning, but the team is part of it and that is what reliability involves. You win and lose as a team. The only people for this idea are those who can't accept the positions of the 2008 Championship.

or maybe they retain the scoring system and give a separate title if another driver would have more wins than the one with most points - just like the old jim clark trophy (for naturally-aspirated runners), something like that.

a 12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system is the best as it keeps down to 8th place and awards more points for the winner. Maybe a point for pole, fastest lap and most laps led, therefore making 15 if you get the full blown thing.

Just thinking, as it has to go before the FIA next month, would they allow it without the change to their other sports (WTCC, WRC)?

A victory needs to get more important again, but a medal system is totally absurd. Imagine, Alonso would be far ahead of Kubica and for example Barrichello would be in front of most of the other drivers with his fluky 3rd place at Britain. Making the victory more important sounds fine, so that it's worth fighting for it, but a medal system where only lucky results (especially for the worse teams) count - no thanks!

As this seems to be an interesting matter of debate, I added a poll with the most popular options expressed here.

I voted other.

I would have a 10-7-5-4-3-2-1 points system. Maybe a bit uglier in pure looks and a tad odd with 7 points scorers but more advantage goes to the winner without the winner getting too much.
No, I'm not calmer. Just more jaded.

did some counting from 2008 to 1998 and so far, it's only the 2008 season where the champion has lesser wins than another driver with the year before (2007) almost the same (but not quite :) )
