And we are speaking about British here.
In other terms, I dont think they will change the shape of Donington circuit.
Monte Carlo isnt wide enough too and they race over there for 50 years.
The new Singapore circuit isnt wide enough also.
Maybe Bernie aims for something else or he knows something better than us as the other fella said. ;)
Lets wait to see :P
I agree with you on the Turk GP. But when you take Monte Carlo & Singapore, they are just pieces in a museum. Bernie wants a nightrace & singapore says " Hurray we will do it " .. Bernie wants a street race which can earn more glitz and glamour to F1 - " Lets go to Monaco ".

But moving to Donnington is an interesting decision. I haven't seen any races on this track, but i have tried this track in rFactor. Not a bad one. Reminds me a little bit of the A1 Ring. The track does lay around some steep uprise and down slopes. If i am not wrong i remember a hairpin in the final sector leading to the start finish, that should be a place to offer overtaking. With regards to overtaking i think it really depends more than a street or racing track being wide enough. Today's F1 cars don't have that huge jump in power to simply pass someone on a straight line. So they basically need good curves, esp hairpins like the one in France & Canada. I wouldn't discard this circuit completely, but with the exception of Sector 1 .. Silverstone is a nice track for me to driver in rFactor !

Another legendary circuit cancelled. Go on Bernie, only a couple of tracks left to cancel and your mikey mouse series will be completed, but please don´t brand it Formula 1 anymore.

Donington is a very good track, just to see the 1993 European GP, but I hope F1 will be back at Silverstone as soon as possible because it's an historical circuit

We'll see if it was a good decision by Bernie to kick Silverstone out.... I'm not sure if Donigton was a good decision.

Some information about Donnington Park:

Image

Donington Park is a site near Castle Donington in North West Leicestershire, England, owned by Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd. It is used as a motor racing track, and for music festivals. On 4th July 2008 it was announced that from 2010, Donington Park will stage the Formula One British Grand Prix.

The original Donington track was opened in 1931, and initially used for motorcycle races.[1] In 1935 it saw Richard Shuttleworth win the Donington Grand Prix in an Alfa Romeo P3, in the 1937 Donington Grand Prix and 1938 Donington Grand Prix, the race winners were respectively Bernd Rosemeyer and Tazio Nuvolari, both in Auto Union 'Silver Arrows'.The circuit at Donington Park was closed in 1939 due to World War 2, when it became a military vehicle depot. In the early 1970s the circuit was bought by Tom Wheatcroft, who funded the rebuilding of the track, which was re-opened May 27, 1977. The first postwar race meeting was organised by the Nottingham Sports Car Club, but that nearly didn't happen, as the local ramblers tried to assert their rights to retain access to footpaths at the 11th hour. The meeting went ahead as a "Motor Trial", a legal loophole that curtailed the use of single seater racing cars for that opening meeting.

The NSCC continued to run race meetings at Donington until the Donington Racing Club was formed and a licence to run race meetings obtained. The Melbourne Loop was built in 1985 to increase the lap distance to 2.5 miles (4.02 km) and allow the track to host Grand Prix motorcycle races - at 1.957 miles (3.149 km) without the loop, the circuit was deemed too short. In recent times Donington has held meetings of MotoGP, the British Touring Car Championship and British Superbikes, as well as the 1993 European Grand Prix. Other events taking place at the track include the World Series by Renault and the Great and British Motorsport Festival. On 26 August 2007 the circuit hosted the British Motocross Grand Prix, with a purpose-built motocross circuit constructed on the infield of the road circuit. In 2007 the track was sold to Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd. Donington Park is also home to a museum known as the Donington Grand Prix Exhibition which opened in 1973, and has the largest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world.

Ted Kravitzs has made some interesting points in his latest "note book"

Code: Select all

East Midlands Airport

When we do the British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park, the radar from EMA plays havoc with our radio cameras and radio microphone frequencies. And we’re the only broadcasters at the track. There are 25-30 broadcasters at each GP with live radio cameras.

Then there’s telemetry. The touring car teams don’t use telemetry and microwave links like the F1 teams do. These would be similarly affected.

Some of Ferrari and McLaren’s encrypted radio channels are very close to air traffic control frequencies.

And last but not least, I don’t think half the teams would be allowed to erect their radio masts or their triple storey motorhomes in the paddock because they would reach to within 300 feet of the aircraft landing on runway 09.

The paddock

At present the paddock is hemmed in by the start/finish straight on one side and the Melbourne loop on the other.

There is not the space to fit F1 trucks and motorhomes into that area.

So either the paddock will have to move down towards the first corner (thus ruining the run from Redgate to the Craner Curves) or the entire Melbourne loop will have to be moved (putting it into what’s now a car park and closer to the A453).

They could put the paddock on the bridge straight, but that’s where the exhibition centre presently is, which gains Donington so much non-racing revenue.

The access

The A453 is just a single lane either way. This will have to be widened. Houses will have to be demolished.

The undulating Walton Hill on that road that will complicate construction. Passengers driving to the airport will be delayed. New access roads will have to be built to the north-west of the circuit.

The track

Run-off area and gravel traps are too small for current F1 standards.

The signature bump in the road under the Dunlop Bridge would have to be ground down.

New areas for a medical centre, a TV compound, and such things as fuel farms and truck parking need to be found. Money and time can solve all these problems.

I don’t see how Donington Park has enough of either.

I thought it would be hard for Donnington before reading about the airport! I can't see how it is going to happen tbh

Well, I hope they don't alter the current circuit. However, I think they'll be forced too . Plus, the way modern F1 is, they'll probably do away with all the gravel traps and grass and replace them with run-off areas, tennis courts and gigantic kerbs. If so, expect Donington to end up looking more like Magny Cours with all it's additions. As somebody already stated, if they're forced to redesign the circuit to suit modern F1, they'll no doubt bring in Herman Tilke :tired:. If that happens, it's almost guaranteed to suck. I really feel that F1 is going to ruin a truly classic track but I hope I'm wrong.

As for Monaco, true statement BUT in recent years they took away the San de Vous barriers and replaced it with a ridiculous kerb. Not to mention the swimming pool section before Rascasse being replaced with kerbing, taking the challenge out of the circuit. Shame.

expected changes to donington park that i made in paint, copied from todays motorsport news magazine
Donington changes.jpg
the melbourne hairpin will remain, but as a first tun with a slight kink preceeding it, rather than a chicane. the craner curves and old hairpin will remain, with an extra loop added. the start finish straight will also be moved to before the melbourne hairpin

If the pits are being shifted to the Dunlop Bridge, is that going to be the new start/finish straight? It's just typical of modern F1 to ruin a classic track. However, I hope that Autosport's report is more accurate Motorsport News'. That way, at least most of the current layout will remain. Plus, I see Herman Tilke is being brought in to design the new sections . This will suck.

The thing with Donington is that i rank it in with the Sachenring, Mugello etc in that it is a MotoGP circuit, not an F1 circuit, but at least there will be a British Grand Prix until 2019.

Without it the British Grand Prix's up sh*t creak.
And we'll have the Mongolian GP instead :P or something.
