Ferrari's Felipe Massa was quickest on the second day of testing at the Jerez circuit, where eight Formula One team are carrying out their programmes this week.

The Brazilian driver, who yesterday was forced to miss the session after feeling unwell, returned to the cockpit of the Ferrari F2007 and emerged on top of the times with a best lap of 1:19.746.

Massa beat teammate Kimi Raikkonen by three tenths of a second after the Finn lost a big part of his day due to a mechanical problem and then poor weather, with rain hitting the track in the afternoon.

The Spyker team completed on Wednesday their two-day shakedown with the new F8-VII at Silverstone circuit.

German Adrian Sutil took over from teammate Christijan Albers, and he completed 134 kilometres in icy weather conditions at the British track.

The team managed 26 laps before Sutil lost control of his car and crashed against the barriers, causing minor damage to the F8-VII.

With temperatures dropping and heavy snow predicted in the evening, the team took the decision to return to the factory and start preparing for next week's test at Barcelona.

"It's been another useful day of testing," said chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. "We solved some minor mechanical issues we had yesterday and now head to Barcelona to continue the programme in warmer temperatures.

"Overall it was a very positive shakedown and a good basis to start from."

Sutil added: "Today was actually very good for a first roll out, and the car was quick. This year's car is definitely better than last year's car and we had no real technical problems. I put in some quick lap times from the start and I could tell the engine was very, very good.

"Of course the end of the day was disappointing; I went on the kerb and touched a strip of damp grass - if you touch it you know you will have problems. It wasn't a big crash, we will repair the car and get out back in time for Barcelona.

Heidfeld on top at wet Jerez

Thursday, February 8th 2007, 16:54 GMT

Nick HeidfeldNick Heidfeld topped the times on the rain-hit final day of testing at Jerez in Spain on Thursday, with his BMW appearing well suited to the wet conditions.

With intermittent rain showers throughout the day, there was little chance of meaningful dry running - but that did not stop a lot of drivers from completing wet weather programmes.

Heidfeld began the day working on extreme weather tyres before switching to the standard wet tyres for traction control and set-up work. His BMW team, who saw Timo Glock set the third quickest time, packed up at lunchtime though to head to Barcelona for next week's test.

Alexander Wurz ended Williams' encouraging first test with their FW29 with another good showing as he ended the day second overall, half a second behind Heidfeld's best time.

His teammate Nico Rosberg had a less successful day though, finishing sixth overall and bringing out the red flags in the morning after stopping on the way to the garage.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth quickest for Ferrari, just ahead of Honda's Rubens Barrichello - who stopped on the track at 10:35am with a suspected mechanical problem.

Further down the order, David Coulthard and Mark Webber continued to have their share of troubles with the new RB3.

Tenth fastest Coulthard went off the track at 12:12pm, before returning to action shortly afterwards and then stopping on the track. Webber stopped on track just five minutes later.

The Australian continued to have problems with the seat of his car, although he will get a new one for next week's test at Barcelona.

"I might not want to race tomorrow but I am not really bruised," said Webber of the seat.

McLaren's MP4-22 did not appear to be as dominant in the wet as it was in the dry, with Pedro de la Rosa down in 12th overall on the timesheet.

World champion Fernando Alonso gave up running in the morning, and left the attending press furious when he left the track early, cancelling a planned media briefing. Several frustrated Spanish journalists were seen chasing after his car as he left the paddock.

Marco Andretti completed 62 laps in the Honda and ended the day at the bottom of the timesheets, although less than one second off the pace.

Renault packed up in the morning after deciding that there was little point in testing in the wet, therefore saving some of their tyre allocation.
