McLaren will have to wait until the middle of February before finding out whether its McLaren MP4-23 will be eligible to race in the 2008 Formula 1 world championship.

It was announced following this week's meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council that an investigation into whether McLaren's 2008 challenger incorporates any confidential Ferrari information has been concluded.

But despite the results having been submitted to the WMSC, it now seems likely that the uncertainty over McLaren's 2008 participation is set to drag on potentially beyond the launch and pre-season testing of its new car.

According to a statement from the FIA on Friday, the WMSC has decided to call an extraordinary general meeting on February 14 to discuss the findings with Ferrari, McLaren and any other interested competitors, leaving McLaren's 2008 campaign in the balance.

"In its decision of 13 September 2007, the WMSC instructed the FIA Technical Department to conduct an investigation of the preparatory work by McLaren on its 2008 car to determine whether that car incorporates any confidential Ferrari information," read the statement.

"This investigation has been concluded and a detailed report submitted to the WMSC.

"The WMSC considers that McLaren, Ferrari and the other competitors in the FIA Formula 1 world championship should be afforded the opportunity to make considered representations on the report at an extraordinary general meeting of the WMSC to be held on Thursday 14 February 2007 in Paris."

I think its a bit harsh on Mclaren. They could spend a load of money on development and testing to be told they can't race. I think it should have been sorted out the the end of this year

McLaren remains confident that it will get clearance to race its 2008 car – despite being made to wait until four weeks before the new season as a result of Friday’s World Motor Sport Council ruling.

The WMSC was expected to consider at Friday’s meeting in Monaco whether any Ferrari intellectual property has been incorporated into McLaren’s MP4-23, based on a report submitted by FIA-appointed officials who inspected designs at the team’s Woking factory.

Instead, however, it opted to defer that decision until a new WMSC meeting next February in order to give McLaren, Ferrari and other rival teams the opportunity to respond to the report.

McLaren had hoped to put any questions over the eligibility of its new car to rest and focus exclusively on the 2008 campaign.

But in an official statement it reacted with equanimity to the WMSC’s decision.

“McLaren acknowledges the World Motor Sport Council’s announcement to defer its decision regarding the team’s 2008 car to an extraordinary general meeting to be held on Thursday 14th February 2008 in Paris,” the statement said.

“From the very beginning McLaren has provided the FIA with full access and complete cooperation, and remains confident no confidential information has been incorporated within the team’s 2007 and 2008 cars.”

Its good that they have taken a positive stance about this, I just hope the new car is alright and we can get back to the good stuff, the racing. Otherwise all this politics will bring F1 crashing down

Right when we were ready to say that this season was finally over, this happens.
I just don't think that they needed to take this any further than it already has been.

I might not agree with everithing Mac have done this year, but it is unfair to let a team go through the production phase of the new car, which obviously costs a lot of money, without knowing whether they will face a penalty for next year. They checked the plans for both cars today, so what the hell are they waiting for to reach a verdict? &doh And what's with that mistery report Mad Max mentioned? ''hmm''

But then again I don't think anything will happen in February, so....
But man is this a long off seson or what?
