Williams technical director Sam Michael is confident the team is on target with the recovery plan it set itself prior to the start of the season.

The Grove squad began this year targeting a move back up the grid after slipping to a lowly eighth place in the constructors’ standings in 2006 and placed a particular emphasis on improving its reliability record.

After the opening five races of this season, Williams is fifth in the standings having been consistently challenging for points in the year’s opening races.

And Michael says he has been pleased with both the speed and finishing record of the FW29 so far.

“It was a good start compared to where we came from last year,â€￾ he told the Bridgestone Motorsport podcast.

“This year our target was to be respectable in terms of our performance and also make sure we sort out our reliability issues.

“We have gone a long way towards doing that, we still have got a lot of work to do to get to the front, but we are on target to do that.â€￾

Williams has taken points away from all but two of the races to date in 2007 and heads to this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Toyota, Red Bull and Honda in the standings.

I have to say that Williams are gradually getting better and better. Hopefully they will soon be back to there 1995/1996/1997 day's. (i.e. at the front) then we will have a 4-5 way tie for the championship, with Ferrari, Mclaren, BMW, Renault and Williams (And personally I hope Honda will be back up there aswell. but it seems a long way off)

I'm suprised Williams isn't doing better. Frank Williams is a fanatical nut (as well as Patrick Head) about keeping up technically with improvements over the season. I think McLaren and Ferrari are just doing that much more work in the off season and in between races.. There is still time to catch up, but it better be soon! The Toyota engine seems to lack a little pace though.. Maybe it's handling issues?

As a Williams fan, I have been an improvement from last year's performance and I'm happy with it. The car looks reliable, the engine is not bad, and the technical team improved from last year.

I am happy with Nico's performances, but I'm sorry to say that I have expected more from Wurz, especially in qualifying. Luckily for him he has won some points during last race, else, he would have risked his seat for the last bit of the season.

Williams - Toyota engines should help them financially, Alex Wurz is very strong technically and Rosberg has proven to be reasonably effective. Hopefully the team will turn things around in 2007, but they face a difficult future. Very sad that one of the brightest teams in F1 has deteriorated to this so quickly.

I feel the teams ahead of Williams are Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, Renault and Red Bull so they still have a long way to go.

I'm sure Williams are better than Red bull. RB might be better during quali's but really behind during races.

i think red bull are doing very well but their reliability is a problem...dc was doing really good in one race in the points and so was mark until they both retired!! dc got 5th in spain although the monaco thing was a bit unfortunate...it ruined both heikki's and dc's chances in the race and i'm sure they both would have done quite well

Rosberg got 6th in free practise 2, so there definately getting better, but Wurz was way back in 17th so something is wrong there

Rosberg followed up his 6th in FP2 with 7th in Quali 3. I say that Mclaren, Ferrari, BMW, and the 1 Renault of Fisi are better than Nico's Williams. But definately not Red Bull

Nico's oil leak with 6 laps to go in a solid 6th place was a real bummer.

Once again, reliability has reared its ugly head at Williams....like last year.

Let's hope they get on it this year and nip it in the bud early this time around.

Williams is a great team, independent as it can be these days, BUT, to get back the glory days you just can't do what everybody else is doing and wait for results, you realy need something uniqe, radical and new, only than you can be ahead of the rest, they had couple ingeniuers back at 2003 and had a great unique front, they were fastest, from than they seemed to have fallen a sleep way deep Image
