Re: First Grand Prix You Watched
Being one of the veterens here i guess, just turned 50 this month, my first race experience was when my dad took me to the 1969 USGP at Watkins Glen. I may have seen the Monaco highlights... earlier, and of course I'm sure yelled at the TV for AJ Foyt to go go at Indy, but seeing the F1 circus is my oldest memory of racing.
69 was just a few years after Lotus had moved the engine to the back of the car... and wings were just proving themselves useful. The public had virtually complete access to the cars, drivers and teams because security was almost non-existant. The sport was barely commercialized by todays standards. The drivers weren't mini conglomerations like those of the last 20 years or so. NO sheltering agents, no PR consultants or gurus to get in the way. Yeah pit access was protected on race afternoon, but the seating was right over the teams. With no yellow flags, pace cars, speed limits... the sport was breathtaking.
My funniest memory is when some wind-bag was trying to impress a babe with his knowledge of the car, and he was obviously pissing off the crew, plus inaccurate in his description of the rear suspension... and the team fired up the engine while his head was under the rear wing. He was litterally blown away.
I had just turned 12 but still remember the babe graciously being offered direct assistance by the team, cutting out the middle-man. Never ceases to amaze me at the fine qualities of women attracted to F1.

San Marino GP 2000.
It was by accident really, i was flicking through the channels and was hooked. I think there was only 5 laps left or something.
I loved Schumacher that year but then realised i didn't (don't ask?! ).

Re: First Grand Prix You Watched
My first race,
I'll always remember - it was that one in Monaco, when the hotel by the sea was on fire about three hours before GP started and in that tunnel, which is under the tunnel was a lot of water on the track. I cant remember year right now.

Mine was in Monza in 1996 ... I think
Since Silverstone 1999, I haven't missed a race. I was 14, quite old for a true F1 fan

The first race was during the 1979 season one of the first races i think was the Dutch GP when my idol Gilles Villeneuve had a puncture in his left rear, proceeded back to the pits with his left rear wheel dangling about!
Like yourself raikks i too havent missed a race since, well i did once but that was due to a car accident on the way home to watch the race (hungary 1989), as it was i still saw the last third of the race! lol

Re: First Grand Prix You Watched
I have seens bits and pieces of an F1 race in 1997, I was proud to see the Schumacher-Villeneuve incident live but back then I was only just beginning to get into motorsports.
My first full race was 1998 Australian GP when the Mclarens literally dominated the whole race by a full lap, it's almost 10 years now but I still think i'm a newbie. I was actually 18 then, so I was quite a late bloomer......my family was always more into the Rally back then but I think I've now converted them all to F1. BTW, if the rumours are true, RIP Colin McRae
