i have only played F1 99, EA sports F12000 and F1challenge 99-02, a couple of the need for speeds (surprised they have not been included), colin mcrae rally, nascer racing 2, nascar 2003, and a couple more-

among them Nascar racing 2,F1 2000, F1 challenge 99-02, Colin McRae rally have had their times as my favorites

LOL. the thing is i have mainly played only these games. i know many people who not only play such racing games, but many other kinds of games too

rFactor, simply due to the fact that there are a ton of mods for it, the loading times are reasonable, and it is very simple to navigate.

rFactor would get my vote if my laptop wasn't so slow. I've played it on a main PC and wow its awesome, now I know why its good with a fast computer.

F1 2006 was okay but F1 2002 was awesome

Dirt 2 is simply immense but doesn't have split screen option

FM3 is out of this world in terms of graphics and cars, but could do with some more tracks (what about Spa, Watking Glen, Interlagos etc - they have some crappy made up ones)

My favorite F1 racing game was F1 Challenge 99-02 with the "RH 2005" mod. I know that Zack played it, as I know him from the modders' forum emacf1.

I tried a few other F1 mods for F1 Challenge, rFactor, GTR 2, GTR Evo but somehow no other game or mod comes even close to the quality of RH 2005, even if its graphics didn't look particularly impressive when it was made. But it was the DRIVING more than anything else which made me crazy about it. I couldn't avoid spinning every few laps for the first two days until I figured out how to attack the kerbs at the right angle. Other games are simply too difficult (you spin even in straight line with Traction Control activated on Low) or don't simulate the car's behavior over the kerbs so well (like some rFactor mods).

The closest to RH 2005 in terms of driving pleasure is any recent version of the Porsche Mobile Supercup mod made by Kiwisteve, there are versions for GTR Evo and GTR Evolution/Race 07 What's amazing about those Porsches is that they punish you every single time you're braking or accelerating while you're on a bump, but you can eventually regain control if you're extremely focused. I find it very rewarding to be able to recover from a near-spin because it's not easy at all, unlike some standard cars from GTR 2 or GTR Evo where it's easier and with some training you can play races of 3 hours and be sure that you won't lose control.
