Argentina, which first hosted a round of the World Rally Championship in 1980, is back on the WRC trail after a year away in 2010.
Based in Villa Carlos Paz north of the capital Buenos Aires, the town lies on the banks of the spectacular San Roque Lake in the south of the Punilla Valley close to the city of Cordoba.
The event is popularised by its jumps, water splashes and the lunar landscape of the high altitude El Condor stage, not to mention the tens of thousands of fans who line the route, and who are considered some of the most enthusiastic on the planet.
Although they are flowing in nature, the stages in Argentina are renowned for being slightly slower but more technically demanding than some of the other tests drivers experience in the WRC.
The surface is also quite sandy, which increases the risk of punctures because of a greater likelihood of rocks being pulled into the road by the competing cars. Because the road surface is softer, ruts can form following the first pass.
Argentina’s Southern Hemisphere location means the rally will take place just before the start of the country’s winter from June to September, which will increase the challenge facing the crews as they negotiate the testing terrain in colder and wetter conditions.

Loeb and Ogier star in Buenos Aires demo
Citroen heroes Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier took a break from their Rally Argentina preparations to thrill more than 50,000 fans at a special demonstration event in the capital Buenos Aires on Saturday.
Loeb and Ogier, who have won two WRC events apiece this season, performed various driving displays aboard a Citroen DS3 WRC in the city’s Place de la Republique.
“Citroen in Argentina are really pushing the WRC and the Citroen Road Show is one of the best examples of this,” said Citroen Racing team manager Sven Smeets. “The event was organised between Citroen, Total and Red Bull and it’s great for us to be involved.”
The Citroen Road Show was shown live on television in Argentina and a number of local press and radio attended.
Seven-time world champion Loeb and Ogier are both currently carrying out reconnaissance for Rally Argentina, round six of the World Rally Championship, which gets underway with a superspecial stage on the streets of host town Villa Carlos Paz on Thursday afternoon.
After five rounds, Loeb heads the WRC drivers’ standings while Citroen tops the makes’ table.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91727Latvala suffers shakedown failure
By David Evans
Thursday, May 26th 2011, 14:14 GMT
Jari-Matti Latvala's bid to win Rally Argentina has suffered an early setback after his Ford Fiesta RS WRC suffered a transmission-related failure during shakedown for the world championship round.
Latvala had completed one run through the 3.87-mile Carlos Paz-Cabalango practice stage and had just left the startline for his second pass when the problem occurred.
"I went a few metres forward and lost the drive," said Latvala. "I thought it was driveshaft, I kept going slowly to the end of the shakedown road, then came on the road section. I was a bit worried [about] what is wrong with the car so I stopped there. It's on the transmission side but I don't know exactly what is the problem."
Latvala's car is being returned to the service park in Villa Carlos Paz where Ford engineers will examine the exact cause of the problem and carry out repairs.
Petter Solberg was also delayed during shakedown following a front-right driveshaft failure on his privateer Citroen DS3 WRC. Benoit Nogier, boss of Citroen Racing Technologies said: "We have to check the data because he did not hit anything."
Shakedown finishes at 12:00 local time.

Re: WRC 2011 Round 06 : Rally Argentina
Thanks for all the links.
After a strong start in Sweden, Ford has been getting it's butt kicked by Citroen. Hopefully Latvala can get his transmission issue figured out and put some pressure on Ogier and Lobe. Does anyone know where I can find a list of all the shakedown times? I wanna see how Block did.

Re: WRC 2011 Round 06 : Rally Argentina
http://www.wrc.com/news/new-gearbox-for ... ?fid=14752New gearbox for Latvala in Argentina
Jari-Matti Latvala will start Rally Argentina with a new gearbox fitted to his Ford Fiesta RS WRC after the original unit failed during shakedown for round six of the world championship.
Under the WRC’s event-linking regulations, introduced to help control costs, Latvala had two gearboxes at his disposal for Argentina: one previously unused, albeit sealed unit and one that had completed the Jordan Rally back in April and was earmarked as a spare for the Finn in South America.
Championship rules permit teams to employ one ‘joker’ during the course of the season, which effectively enables them to break the event chain in circumstances where a component has failed.
Following the breakage in shakedown, Ford engineers elected to install a new gearbox to prevent Latvala from having to complete the 378.15 competitive kilometres in Argentina with a used gearbox and with no spare in the event of a problem during the rally. Employing a ‘joker’ does not incur a time penalty.
Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson explained: “Jari’s gearbox broke this morning. You’re allowed one joker in the year. Because of the fact the spare gearbox had already done Jordan we obviously decided after a few discussions with [technical director] Christian Loriaux to fit a brand new ‘box in Jari’s car. You always fear you might want to use it later on in the year and we lost that opportunity for something else later in the season. We’ll have to make sure nothing else happens.”
Wilson said it was too early to determine the cause of the failure, adding: “We don’t really know the whole consequences until we get it analysed [back in the UK]. We’ve sent photos back to the guys to try and get some ideas of what’s gone wrong.”
As a result of the gearbox failure, Latvala only managed one full speed run in shakedown. However, Wilson is convinced that this won’t affect the Finn’s chances when the rally gets underway with the Super Special Carlos Paz later today.
“It won’t affect him,” said Wilson. “He missed out on one shakedown run. He’s come straight from his Greece test and I have no worries about anything impacting on going into this event.”
