Quesnel expects top fives from Raikkonen

Former Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen should be looking to finish in the top five on the next two rounds of the World Rally Championship, according to his team principal Olivier Quesnel.

The Finn, who was up to fourth on the first asphalt event of the year in Bulgaria, was seventh in Germany last week. But Quesnel defended Raikkonen saying the Trier-based event was harder to learn.

“Germany was not easy,” said Quesnel. “The surface is changing all of the time, it’s not so easy to come here for the first time. Don’t forget, in Bulgaria, it was everybody’s first time there. I think he will be faster in the next two [asphalt rounds]. France is new to everybody and Spain is a little bit more like the circuit. I think he will be in the top five on both of those rallies.”

Quesnel added that he hoped to retain Raikkonen for next season, but admitted it was anything but a foregone conclusion. Raikkonen is now thought to be in discussions with other WRC teams about 2011 and beyond.

“We want Kimi Raikkonen with us next year,” said Quesnel. “I don’t know if he comes. I didn’t speak with him yet, but we like him here and we want him to drive a Citroen again next year.”
Raikkonen has made no further comment on his future. The Finn insists he would like to remain in the WRC, but he refuses to close the door on a possible return to Formula One.

Well, I don´t know, there is not that much cars to begin with. I think Loeb, Ogier, and Sordo will be hard to beat. Maybe he could beat the Ford guys but he will have to drive without mistakes. I don´t know if he likes the roads in France but this could be his chance since France will be new to everybody.

I think top 5 is a bit too much too, Kimi needs to driver perfectly, no mistakes. But to Iceman nothing is impossible. Like @Valuk said Loeb, Ogier, and Sordo will be quite hard, almost impossible especially Loeb and Sordo, they are absolutely fast on asphat. Latvala is in a good season I think that will be difficult beat him too, as well Peter Solberg. So expect a top five to Kimi is quite difficult.

I think Quesnel is counting on one of the top six guys not to finnish the rally (seems to be a pattern in this sport) and the Kimi "just" has to have a perfect drive with out mistakes and win one of the top 6.... I also think Quesnel is at the moment daydreaming of doing history and having citroen 1-2-3-4-5 in one of the asphalt rallies, thats IS a real possibility at the moment.

Raikkonen boosted by stage win
Kimi Raikkonen says that his first World Rally Championship stage win has given him additional motivation to continue in the sport next year.
The 2007 Formula One World Champion went quickest on the final stage of the Rallye Deutschland, Circus Maximus, to claim a fastest time on only his eighth-ever WRC event in a World Rally Car.

“It’s a nice feeling, definitely,” said Raikkonen, who showed himself consistently capable of setting top six stage times in Germany. “Maybe this stage was a bit more like a racing circuit! But it’s a sign that we’re moving in the right direction and learning all the time. Our work with the pace notes in Germany, for example, was nearly perfect.”

With Citroen boss Olivier Quesnel having underlined his desire to keep Raikkonen in the Citroen Junior Team next year, the Finn is inclining towards remaining in the World Rally Championship for 2011.

“Nothing is decided yet, but I’m enjoying myself here,” said Raikkonen. “I also think that we’re making progress. Rallying is all about experience, so I think it would be good if we could use this experience next year.”

Raikkonen has some options to return to Formula One, but he says he does not miss single-seater racing and that he would only go back if it were with a front-running team. If he stays in rallying with the Citroen Junior Team next year he would drive the new DS3 WRC: the same car as Sebastien Loeb.

Citroen Junior Team manager Benoit Nogier also believes that Raikkonen’s fastest stage time will help convince him to stay in the World Rally Championship next year. “It was a real morale-booster for the whole team,” he said. “In many ways, what Kimi achieved in Germany was just as impressive as what Sebastien Ogier achieved. It’s a very positive sign for the future.”

I am a little surprised how nice the bosses are talking about Kimi. Maybe the last year was so poor from Ferrari side that this normal situation feels so good.

I hope Citroen can make enough DS3s next year and I hope Red Bull will continue to sponsor Kimi, then everything will be perfect.
