Flavio Briatore, who appeared at the hospital in Pietra Ligure, talked with the Polish driver. According to the Italian, the Pole, not at all obvious that he had an accident. Briatore is a great optimist when it comes to back to Kubica's starts in Formula 1 - When is the first Grand Prix in Europe? In three months? Well, you have the answer when Kubica back on track - told reporters the former head of Renault.

That sounds good, but i just want to see him in a F1 car again - as soon as possible, but it will probably take a year, but i really hope he will drive some races this year, wish you all the best Robert

Thoughts on a Kubica Return

By BRAD SPURGEON

The news is still trickling in about Robert Kubica’s physical condition after his rally accident on Sunday.

His Lotus Renault GP team reports that he was briefly awake Monday morning, spoke to his relatives and was able to move his fingers, which is a good sign. But the team said it would be several days before it is known if the operation was 100 percent successful.

“Meanwhile, the doctors will decide how they will treat his elbow and shoulder fractures,” the team said in a statement. “Robert may have to undergo surgery once again for this, but not for a few days.”

The question on everyone’s mind is can the Polish driver return to top-level racing after this? All will depend on whether or not he can recover the needed top physical condition and just how long that takes – i.e., without losing touch with the sensations of driving a Formula One car.

My own feeling is that if any driver can do it, Kubica can. There is a passage from a profile I wrote of Kubica in 2008, in which we see how he handles such situations after a car accident when he was a teenager:

“Then came two difficult seasons, 2003 and 2004, in the Formula 3 Euro Series, after a character-testing event,” I wrote. “As a passenger in a car in Poland, Kubica suffered multiple fractures to his right arm in a road accident just before the 2003 season. It left a big scar and metal prostheses in his arm, but he brushes it off.

” ‘I think all people – and not only racing drivers but every single person that wants to achieve something – when you are in a bad situation, you become stronger,’ he said. ‘Your motivation is higher and you are pushing more, working more, harder, to get there.’

“Returning to the cockpit a month and a half after the accident and six races into the season, he won.”

But that accident happened in a road car when someone else was driving. Kubica’s accident Sunday was with him driving the car. That will inevitably require a little bit of mental rehabilitation. But there, too, Kubica should do well, as another article I wrote indicates through the words of Riccardo Ceccarelli, a Formula One doctor, who dealt with Kubica at the time of his accident as a teenager:

“He never complained, never stressed, never cried, never said, ‘I am unlucky,’ ” Ceccarelli said. “He was just working, working hard, eight hours a day. His manager was worried about his return to racing, I was worried. The only one who was not worried was Robert.”

Ceccarelli said he thought Kubica would need three months to recover, but the driver asked to get back in his race car less than six weeks later.

This was a terrible thing to learn of on Sunday, when people just wanted to find out who was driving which day in Jerez. The continued cautious optimism from Kubica's doctors has been a pretty strong antidote to the often horrifying details that have emerged about the crash itself, and the extent of Robert's injuries.

He really is very, very lucky to be alive. I hope his recovery is swift and complete.

Really good to hear that there are no infections yet, that is always a big concern...
Kubica continues to make progress

By Jonathan Noble and Michele Lostia

Robert Kubica is continuing to make good progress in hospital as he recovers from the serious injuries he suffered in his rally crash at the weekend.

The Renault driver is scheduled to remain in intensive care for another three days, but medical staff are encouraged by the way his condition has improved since his lengthy operation on Sunday.

Giorgio Barabino, who is head of the intensive care unit at the Santa Corona hospital where Kubica is being looked after, was quoted as saying by IVG.it that the Polish driver was coming along in an 'excellent' way.

"His conditions have improved and are good, considering the crash," Barabino said. "No infections have arisen in the post-surgery phase. The limb is well vascularised and his life parameters are all within the norm. There is a good medical evolution, considering the heavy traumas suffered.

"At the moment we are confident on the evolution of the medical situation. Kubica will have to stay in intensive care for between 48 and 72 hours, during which all kinds of checks of the arm's and hand's functionality will be carried out.

"As for recovery times, after this first day we are optimistic on the future: the patient is reacting in an excellent way.

"Within one week surgery can be performed on the fractured elbow and the humerus, which haven't been treated yet. Today [Monday] the driver has always been awake and conscious, even though he feels pain. Despite being sedated he talked with his manager and with hospital personnel."

Kubica has also elected to remain at the Santa Corona hospital, rather than be moved somewhere else.

"We are obviously delighted with this decision," Barabino added. "We are satisfied with our work and with this acknowledgement.

"Robert's medical evolution is excellent: he is able to drink and to execute small movements with the hand."

Although the hospital is encouraged with his progress, Barabino still thinks it could take up to one year for Kubica to fully recover from his injuries.

"It's difficult to make predictions," he said. "What's certain is that it's rare to find such a strong patient.

"A partial recovery will be possible within a few months: we'll see if he can reach a full functionality of his arm and hand. To reach an objective such as this, he would need one year anyway."

on this weblink you can find a video of the computer reconstruction of Kubica's crash. It was made by Polish specialists.
Russian texts say that if the rail had been a whole piece (they say it is a condition under the rules), it would've stopped a car without damaging it the way it did

EDIT: it's the same video as Sebastien Loeb gave a link to.

Lotus Renault GP Press Statement:
On Thursday, Robert should undergo some more surgery in order to stabilise the fractures to his right shoulder and right foot. Three or four days later, another operation will allow his elbow fracture to be stabilised as well.

Robert will remain at the Santa Corona Hospital for two to three weeks. A decision will then be taken about where he should go in order to continue his rehabilitation.

As his friend and doctor Riccardo Ceccarelli said, “Two days ago we were praying for him to live, now we are beginning to dream.”
