City spectacular for Rally de Portugal

Next month’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal, round six of the FIA World Rally Championship, will kick off with a promotional stage through the streets of Porto on 23 May.

The 950-metre long course won’t form part of the competitive route but will instead be used to build interest in the rally, which takes place some 550 kilometres away in Faro in Portugal’s Algarve region from 27-30 May.

Billed as the Porto Roadshow and based around Porto’s City Hall and Aliados Avenue, the event is a joint initiative between the rally organisers and North One Sport, promoter of the WRC.

It gets underway with an autograph session at 1430hrs local time. At 1530hrs, crews will get the chance to practice the stage, which features jumps and chicanes plus donut and drifting areas, before it goes live at 1700hrs.

Portugal’s RTP Channel 1 will broadcast one hour of live coverage from the event.

Close on 20 star drivers from the WRC will be taking part in the event, including championship leader Sebastien Loeb, his Citroen team-mates Dani Soro and Kimi Raikkonen, works Ford drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala and local aces Armindo Araujo and Bernardo Sousa. The five Pirelli Star Drivers will also be in action.

Bumper Peugeot entry for Portugal

The Rallye de Portugal, which runs from May 28-30, will feature the biggest entry of Peugeot 307 WRCs since the 2005 Rally Finland.

Three examples of the French car will be seen in Portugal, matching the number of cars that were entered in Finland by the factory team five years ago for Marcus Gronholm, Markko Martin and Sebastian Lindholm.

Driving the privately-entered Peugeots in Portugal will be French Championship regular Jean-Marie Cuoq, Hungarian driver Frigyes Turan, and Group N driver Spyros Pavlides, who is stepping up to a World Rally Car for the first time.

The last time the Peugeot 307 WRC was driven in World Championship competition was the 2009 Catalunya Rally, where veteran Dany Snobeck finished 10th.

This gives the Portuguese event a total of 18 World Rally Cars at the start, with a total of 73 entries from 32 different countries.

The rally will also feature a historic section, where four-time World Champion and two-time Portugal winner Juha Kankunnen has been confirmed to drive a MkII Ford Escort co-driven by Nicky Grist. The historic section is open to classic cars homologated before 31 December 1981, but excluding four-wheel drive cars.

Vodafone Rally de Portugal looks to be extremely popular with competitors

In addition to being recognised as providing spectators with some of the best value and most accessible rally action, this year’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal also looks to be extremely popular with competitors. No less than 75 entries for the rally have been received, from 33 countries across all five continents, demonstrating the international appeal of the event.

It is also worth noting that the event has the greatest number of entries so far in the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship.

The 2010 Vodafone Rally de Portugal will count towards no less than seven series: WRC (Manufactures and Drivers), S-WRC (S-2000 cars), J-WRC (Junior), Ford Fiesta Sporting International Trophy, Pirelli Star Driver and the Portuguese Championship. The rally features three legs and total distance of 1223.07 km, including 18 special stages covering 355,32 km, almost 30% of the rally distance.

Porto Roadshow
Top world rally drivers on Oporto streets

The Porto Roadshow will be held on the Sunday prior to the rally - May 23rd – amid the stunning scenery of Aliados Avenue. The area surrounding City Hall will be transformed for the day, into a superspecial stage; 950 meters long and with jumps, chicanes, donut areas and drifting, it will set the scene for the following week’s rally perfectly.

The show will start with an autograph session at 2.30pm, then at 3.30pm, practice will start. From 5.00pm and with just one driver on the track, the event itself will begin, with a one-hour live transmission on Portugual’s RTP Channel 1.
Almost twenty drivers and cars will attend the event. The confirmed names are:
