Alonso calls for F1 tribute

Fernando Alonso hopes a minute’s silence can be organised before the European Grand Prix in Valencia as a mark of respect following the Madrid plane crash.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Spain after 153 people were killed when a Spanair jet crashed shortly after take-off at the capital's Barajas airport on Wednesday.

The tragic events cast a sombre mood over the opening day of the inaugural Valencia street race and Alonso said that he, like his fellow Spaniards, had been affected by the disaster.

"It will definitely change the weekend for me because it's a tragedy," the Renault driver was quoted as saying by Reuters on Thursday.

"All the Spanish people are in shock and I am too.

"It's probably the saddest approach to a weekend I have had."

Alonso added that he would try and organise a minute’s silence with his fellow drivers before the weekend’s track action got underway.

"I will wear a black armband and I will talk with the [other] drivers tomorrow," he said.

"Maybe we can do something before starting, maybe one minute's silence in the pit lane.

"Tomorrow we will start slowly to get into the weekend. Life continues but it's a different weekend compared to what it should be."

Three of the Spaniard’s fellow drivers who featured in Thursday’s pre-event press conference said that they would be happy to hold a minute’s silence for the victims.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton said: “Yes; for me, I would definitely be looking forward to doing that.

“I just want to send out my heartfelt thoughts and best wishes to all the families and to all the people in Spain.

“I think it’s a tragedy, I was really sad to hear it had happened.

“We’re in a beautiful country, in a beautiful city.

“I just hope that doesn’t stall our weekend. I hope we are able to move on and do the country proud.”

Felipe Massa added: “I think last year we had a similar accident in Brazil, and it was a disaster, it was so sad.

“As Lewis said, I give 100 percent support to the people because we are here for sport and there are so many important things apart from sport which are the lives of these people, and it’s a very sad moment.

“I think all of us need to do everything we can to help these people.”

Jarno Trulli echoed the pair’s thoughts, saying: “I share the same feelings.”

Should we start taking bets on how many minutes the ITV stream will be behind today? I'd expect 24 because ITV are good at making things worse than better.

12 minutes delayed I expect.
When it does start, its will be able 5 minutes until the F1 logo comes up and another 5 until practice starts.
